‘I stomped him,’ Florida psychiatric patient arrested for attacking roommate at hospital

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. (CBS12) — A psychiatric patient from South Florida State Hospital was arrested on Tuesday after police say he violently attacked his roommate.

The Pembroke Pines Police Department said a staff member found the victim during a routine morning check and saw him lying on the ground face-up, unconscious and covered in blood. Staff said they called 911 just after 7 a.m., believing the incident was a cardiac arrest, Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue transferred the victim to Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

The Pembroke Pines Robbery and Homicide Unit said detectives were called to the scene due to the severe injuries the victim sustained. Detectives said after being briefed, they also believed the victim suffered from a cardiac episode and injured himself. However, upon further investigation, hospital staff told police that the victim shared a room with 63-year-old Alexander Ramseur.

The detective said he noticed a bloody shoe print where the victim was found, he originally thought it was from first responders. It wasn’t until detectives met with Ramseur. They said they immediately noticed blood on his white sneakers and the soles of the shoes appeared to match the footprint found in the room and Ramseur had a scrape on his knuckles. Detectives asked him if he saw what happened to his roommate.

Ramseur responded, “I told him not to mess with me anymore, and when he didn’t stop, I stomped him.” He also told police he got up and started to attack the victim. He pushed the victim the ground and started punching and kicking the victim on the floor. Eventually, he dragged the man near the bead and went back to his bed.

The victim sustained serious injuries. According to Memorial Hospital staff, the victim has a fractured right sinus wall with hemorrhage, brain bleed, a lacerated liver and spleen and a bruised lung. At the time of Ramseur’s arrest, the victim remains unconscious and in critical condition.

Ramseur was arrested for attempted murder and is being held at the Broward County Main Jail.
